A cancer screening usually only takes a matter of minutes but it can be a life saver. Early detection means it can be treated and increase your chance of recovery.
The screening is a thorough visual and physical check of the inside of your mouth, soft tissue and palate, roof of the mouth, tonsils, throat and underneath the tongue. After the visual exam your jaw area, face and cheeks and under the chin will also be checked for any signs of potential problems.
It is not a diagnostic screening and, if your dentists spots anything of concern that might benefit from further investigation, then you will be referred to a specialist for further checks. It is also an opportunity for you to mention any concerns you might have and discuss them with your dentist.
