It is not always possible to save a tooth if the damage is too great and the tooth cannot be restored by either a filling or a crown.

Additionally, sometimes it is necessary to extract wisdom teeth and it might be advised that some teeth may need to be removed before traditional orthodontic treatment begins.

What does a tooth extraction involve?

Your dentist will use an effective local anaesthetic to make sure the area surrounding the tooth is completely numb so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

There will usually be a wait of a few minutes until the anaesthetic has taken effect. The tooth will then be removed. The procedure should only take a few minutes.

What steps should I follow after an extraction?

  • Avoid hot drinks and food for 24 hours
  • After 24 hours rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass)
  • Take care not to dislodge the blood clot in the tooth socket and brush your teeth carefully
  • If there is bleeding, apply pressure by biting down on a sterile cotton pad or tissue
